Peppermint essential oil is hands-down winner when it comes to fresh minty breath.

But how else do you use it?

On a recent trip, I remembered on my way to the airport that I’d left my little travel collection of oils behind.  Mayday, mayday!  Thankfully, I had a 5mL sized Young Living Peppermint essential oil in my pocket.  At least I had one oil with me.

But aside from keeping me feeling fresh after a hefty garlic-laden spaghetti meal, what could peppermint help me with?

It hit home during my travels – yet again – how incredibly versatile many essential oils are.  If you have a large collection of oils on hand, you can afford to be highly fine-tuned with choosing something that’s best suited for every purpose.  But you can cover a tremendous number of needs with a handful of ‘everyday’ essential oils and peppermint is one of them.  Young Living offers an Everyday Oils Collection and Essential 7 Collection, both of which are awesome ways to establish a base on which to build.  Peppermint is available for individual ordering in 15mL size but comes in a super-handy 5mL size in these kits.  You can order and get in touch for my help here.

By the way, if you haven’t yet invested in a reputable and well-researched reference book on essential oils, I can’t recommend highly enough how important this is.  The more you read and learn about these gifts of nature, the more essential oils will become like a fluent second language, and you’ll find yourself really making the most of your oils experience.

So back to getting creative with using peppermint oil during my trip.  In no particular order, here are the top 6 natty ways I used it while I was away.

#1  DEODORISING THE HIRE CAR

No-one smokes in hire cars – well, they aren’t meant to.  But when you’re a non-smoker and you’re stuck in a car with smoke smells malingering, what do you do for a natural solution?  Can you imagine the ingredients that are in those overpowering car deodorising trinkets sold at service stations?  No, thanks.  So I put a few drops of Young Living Peppermint essential oil on the carpet car mats and repeated as needed.  It was amazing how dramatically it helped in no time.  The mats in my car were dark grey, but if the car mat is pale, take care to choose an inconspicuous spot.  Peppermint is colourless and doesn’t tend to leave marks, but be on the safe side.  Or put the peppermint oil on a tissue and tuck that in somewhere.  Smoke smells: sorted!

#2  COUNTER AN ATTACK OF THE CLUMSIES

When I was loading my cases into the car, Wham: I smacked the side of my head with the boot lid as I pulled it up and reached for a case at the same time.  Talk about silly.  (I must have forgotten to use Young Living Brain Power™ essential oil blend that morning!)  Knowing peppermint essential oil is included in plenty of sports rubs and massage oils that help the body cool and warm down after strenuous exercise, I gingerly applied a drop carefully and promptly forgot I’d bumped my noggin at all!  Please always follow guidelines for safe use and if you’ve knocked an area with very sensitive skin or the skin is broken, best give this tip a miss.

#3  PEPPERMINT-INFUSED TEA AND WATER

Assuming it’s safe to drink tap water where you are and you’re choosing to drink it, you can add a drop of Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil for a lovely refreshing and rejuvenating drink.  You can add it to room temperature water, chilled water and very warm water.  Avoid using hot water, as heat damages the delicate molecules and can render some or all of the essential oil’s usual potential benefits useless.  It might still have an enjoyably refreshing flavour, but won’t have the same vitality.  Please note that you should only ever add essential oils to food and drink when the label clearly states it’s safe to do so, as is the case with Young Living Peppermint Vitality essential oil.

#4  FRESHENING UP YOUR HANDS

Peppermint essential oil isn’t the first one you’d think of when it comes to freshening your fingers.  That job is usually given to lemon.  But peppermint is an extra ingredient included in Young Living Thieves® Waterless Hand Purifier, so this tells us there has to be a good reason for that.  With Young Living Peppermint essential oil as a staple in your pocket or purse, you’re all set in case of sticky situations.  Be super-careful not to rub your hands near your eyes or put them in your ears, of course.  These aren’t safe places for essential oils.  Not ever.

#5  PICK-ME UP BOOST

young-living-peppermint-essential-oilAt odd times during the day and particularly late-afternoon, I found my energy levels taking a slump.  No wonder – when you’re travelling, it’s easy to be random with eating times and slack with eating nutritiously.  And often you’re in a different time zone, so – well, your body cycles are out of whack.  Skip the chocolate or sticky bun and coffee, close your eyes and inhale Young Living Peppermint oil directly from the bottle.  You’ll feel refreshed and ready to tackle whatever’s ahead, whether work or socialising or both!  It’s important to keep your eyes closed when you inhale peppermint from the bottle because the menthol content in peppermint essential oil can be irritating if the vapours get too close.  And a nice peppermint-water infusion as described above is beautiful as a pick-me up, too.

#6  COOL OFF IN THE HEAT

One day while away, the weather turned sticky, hot and bothering.  Being of a certain age, I always keep a cotton handkerchief in my pocket.   Presto, just add water and a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil and you have instant cool relief!  While in a cafe, I put the peppermint oil into a cup of room temperature water, stirred it with a spoon then submerged my handkerchief into it.  I gave it a light wring to get rid of the excess water and placed it on the back of my neck and Ahhh, that felt good!  If you aren’t as old school as I am with carrying ‘kerchiefs, you can use a thick paper serviette napkin the same way but you’ll have to squeeze it out gently.  As always, pay attention to your own skin’s sensitivity and if this turns out to feel uncomfortable, ask the waiter for some olive oil then pat that on to dilute the peppermint down.

Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.

Please ensure you are choosing a brand with complete transparency from seed to seal, such as Young Living.  You can learn in this short video why we only ever recommend and choose Young Living oils and love them so much!
