Nutritionists seem pretty much on the same page when it comes to nuts nowadays. No more eeking three lonely cashews out of the jar as a rare naughty treat. High fives all around!

On the contrary, nuts in moderation might help lower cholesterol, with studies finding a serve of raw unsalted nuts (around 1/3 cup or 30g) included with other plant-based foods contributes to reducing LDL (“lousy”) cholesterol and supporting HDL (the good kind).

Cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, macadamias, walnuts, pecans and pine nuts are all great nutritious contenders.

Today’s no-bake treats are plentiful sources of cashews and macadamias and even include some greens!  Spirulina is a rockstar superfood, amazingly rich in protein, nutrients, iron, B12, chlorophyll, antioxidants — and it’s great for curbing appetite so it will help you stop at one. Ok, maybe two.  (Don’t quote me.)

Raw Nutty Sesame Balls

(makes around 20)

  • 1 cup raw cashews
  • 1 cup raw macadamias
  • 1 cup dessicated coconut
  • 1/3 cup unhulled tahini (ground sesame seeds)
  • 1/3 cup honey (choose local honey if you’re prone to hay fever) or blue agave nectar (Young Living offers a beautiful one)
  • 1 tbsp spirulina powder
  • 1 tsp good quality vanilla bean paste (not extract or essence)
  • 1-2 drops Young Living tangerine essential oil* (optional)
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds combined with 2 tbsp black or white chia seeds (for rolling)

Put all ingredients except the mixed sesame/chia seeds into the food processor and whirr until well combined.

Take a level tablespoon of the mixture, roll into a ball and toss in the seeds. Repeat until done, placing the balls onto a baking paper-lined tray.

Put in the fridge or freezer until firm. Sneak a soft one in the meantime if you can’t help yourself.
