Essential oils have a long, rich history of use, and we’ve been taking a closer look lately at a dozen of those featured in ancient scripture. These oils have spiritual references but aren’t just known for helping you to go within or bring forth higher connections. Some essential oils are known primarily for their influence over mood, some are rock star oils when it comes to the more physical plane — and some are ambidextrous and talented in both arenas.

The Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture kit includes a cross-section (available from Young Living™, our preferred source of all things essential oil-related), so it’s very handy in a practical sense, too. (Put ‘scripture’ in the top right search box for more posts on this spiritually practical kit.)

Do you know anyone named Myrtle?   When I hear the name, I think of someone reliable and sweet. She’s quaint and she has a delicate tea service with a painted greenery design and she always puts on the kettle when guests arrive, announced or unannounced. The Myrtle of my mind wears a well-loved cardigan with neatly darned elbows where it’s worn from her hard-working hands and arms being constantly bent, whether from hugging or tending something in the garden. Or maybe she has a greenhouse.

When I looked up the meaning of the name Myrtle, I learned this botanical name was based on the evergreen shrub ruled by Venus, and so by association, it’s symbolic of love, peace, fertility and youthfulness.

Myrtle is high in alpha-pinene (anywhere from 15 to 60% in authentic, genuine myrtle essential oil), which is found abundantly in oils such as fir, pine and juniper — so it shares their trait of being refreshing and invigorating for respiration. Its fragrance is elevating, and it’s well suited to diffusing or placing in a humidifier, which are great delivery systems for essential oils that are supportive to the respiratory system.

As far as its spiritual connections go, the Bible has several mentions of myrtle, some in the same breath as an olive branch and fir, and these:

“And they answered the angel of the Lord that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.” Zechariah 1:11

“Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.” Isaiah 55:13
