Blue tansy is just one of the many charms that come from Morocco and it’s ideal for unwinding. If Humphrey Bogart’s Rick of Casablanca fame had been peddling this relaxing essential oil at his nightclub and gambling den, the plot would have been a lot less tense. For the sake of good action, it’s just as well he wasn’t.
With the botanical name Tanacetum annuum, blue tansy is also known colloquially as Moroccan Chamomile. This plant belongs to the Asteraceae family, as do Roman and German Chamomile. So its nickname is a logical one. The essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering plant, and has beautiful warm, sweet floral notes.
Young Living includes blue tansy in many products and its blends Acceptance™, Australian Blue™, Awaken™, Highest Potential™, JuvaFlex™, Peace & Calming™, Release™, SARA™ and Valor™. And these happen to be amongst the loveliest fragrances you’ll find. If you’re searching for a 100% natural perfume (and there are plenty of good reasons to do so), start with this list. You’ll find a recipe for a DIY perfume using essential oils here.

If we played word association with chamomile, ‘tea’ would be a common first response. Even without knowing the properties of essential oils, most people would associate chamomile with relaxing and unwinding for this reason. Blue tansy is no exception.
Tansy is regarded with caution in general, and rightly so when it’s the variety that contains thujone. This constituent is highly toxic and is often used in insecticides. But blue tansy contains no thujone and is safe for use following the usual guidelines and cautions.
Blue tansy attributes its colour to the chamazulene in its chemistry make up.
You can learn more about ‘blue oils’ here. Funnily enough, blue oils are comforting oils if you’re singing the blues. By the way, singing the blues is a pretty lousy way to get over the blues. Please stop right now and try diffusing uplifting essential oils instead!
Blue tansy also contains menthol which is a ketone. Research this constituent in your trusty essential oils reference book to gain insights into its beneficial effects.
This oil has been finding its way into cult beauty products of recent times. The trouble is, you don’t know the quality of oil you’re getting when it’s in a cosmetic and often the accompanying ingredients are dubious when it comes to lack of toxicity.
Why not DIY a skin serum instead? If the single essential oil of blue tansy is unavailable, choose a blend that includes blue tansy and has no skin sensitivity cautions on the label. Add to organic argan oil or jojoba oil to make a serum to apply before bed, when the body does its own natural restorative processes during sleep. A ratio of roughly 6 drops to 100mL of carrier oil is a gentle starting point. As an added bonus, you’ll enjoy blue tansy’s relaxing benefits when your head hits the pillow. Sweet dreams.
All Young Living oils are guaranteed pure from seed to seal, unlike so many brands out there in the marketplace. You really do get what you pay for. You can check it out with your own eyes in this short video.
Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.
