Hello, autumn, old friend! Shed a few leaves and make yourself comfortable while I rustle up a few autumn essential oils that are ideal for diffusing.
If you’re new to essential oils, you can be forgiven for thinking I’ve lost a few marbles in the summer heat. “Choosing oils based on seasons? You wacky oil-sniffing herbalist!”
Well, now, thank you! Don’t mind if I am. But there’s a good deal of common sense behind my thinking. Different seasons bring different challenges to our systems, so why not target certain oils to help counter that?
Also, essential oils are fun! They mix things up and add variety to the everyday things. Oils make your home smell far more glorious than those toxin-loaded synthetic fragrances. They can energise you, relax you, and make you feel like everything will be ok on a crummy day. They can fortify your defences when you’re out and about and wind you down when you’re home. Essential oils are the healthiest addiction you’ll ever have!
When the humidity eases and the nights start to cool down, the nesting instinct kicks in. We make our homes more cocoon-like, instinctively closing curtains and pulling throw rugs out of the storage chests. By the way, make sure you use cedarwood and lavender essential oils in those boxes and chests, not those rotten mothballs that infuse everything with a noxious cloud that’s very hard to shift! Diffusing essential oils is one of the best ways to enjoy them. Diffusing is user friendly and everyone can enjoy the benefits of the oils, as their molecules will hang around suspended in the air for some time. If anyone at home has a health condition, double check the oils you’re diffusing in case there are any known possible contraindications. This list can get you started.
There are a number of different diffuser styles on the market. Young Living (our preferred supplier of all things oily) has several models including ultrasonic (water-based) and atomiser (no water, more potent). When joining Young Living, we highly recommend ordering one of the Premium Starter Kits (PSK) which include a diffuser and tremendous value including a number of fabulous oils. Please get in touch with us for help with joining and ordering. We’d love to welcome you onto our team!
Not all oils are created equal. Quality varies immensely, so please ensure you are choosing a brand with complete transparency from seed to seal, such as Young Living. Discover why we love them so much in this short video.
This will also connect you up with The Good Oil Team for our personal support and coaching. We'd love to help you on your journey to vibrant well-being the natural way!

So which autumn essential oils are my picks for diffusing? Here are some great ones for creating a comforting and cosy vibe that also helps keep the air fresh when you start leaving fewer windows open. I’ve included both singles and blends. Try combining any two singles at a time (more if you’re used to using oils) and you can add a single to any of the blends as well to put your own personal spin on them.
- Orange (Citrus sinensis) a happy, feel-good oil, rich in limonene (please do research that constituent and expect to be impressed!)
- Ginger (Zingiber officinale) includes 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) which is very comforting for inhalation in the colder months
- Hong Kuai (Chamaecyparis formosensis) richly scented, steam distilled from sustainably harvested wood from Hong Kuai trees in Taiwan that can live 1000+ years. I’ll gladly breathe in oil from anything that lives for that long. Maybe some of it will rub off on me! NB: Diffuse for up to 30 minutes three times a day
- Young Living Abundance™ (includes orange, frankincense, cinnamon bark) spicy sweet and comforting; said to have a frequency of plenitude
- Young Living Thieves (includes clove, lemon, eucalyptus radiata) the core ingredient in Young Living’s range of natural cleaners and toothpastes; spicy and fresh, tremendous for keeping the air smelling fresh; NB: Diffuse for up to 15 minutes at a time every 3-4 hours at most (it also contains cinnamon bark, which is best diffused for short periods only)
- Young Living Harmony™ (includes sandalwood, ylang ylang, geranium) a divine blend that’s uplifting and helps bring us into harmony with all things, including cycles of life. Diffusing Harmony™ will help you to embrace the shift from summer and transition towards the time of year when we have nature’s permission to hibernate somewhat – something in today’s busy world that feels like a taboo!
Not sure how to go about diffusing? Please check out our handy guides here on the Whys of Diffusing and Hows of Diffusing. Then go rummage around and find your thick socks and fluffy slippers. Permission to nest? Permission granted.
Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.
