Essential oil of frankincense is so legendary, we’ve already written about it at length. But can you really have too much of a good thing? I hope not, because we’re writing about it some more.
Bible studies or lack thereof aside, you’ll know frankincense is a ‘religious oil’ thanks to the three wise men, and maybe even a church service where its resin has been burned. It has a long association with religious ceremonies and cleansing and purifying the spirit. For instance, sacks of frankincense resin are shown in a mural on the walls of ancient Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut’s temple which dates back to around mid-1400 BC.
Frankincense also has a long history as an anointing oil, and was spoken of for treating pretty much anything and everything you can imagine. How much of that is stretching the truth for the sake of a good yarn, you’ll need to research in your favourite reliable reference book about essential oils.
If you don’t yet have such a book, it’s an excellent investment. I’d go so far as to say spend the money on a good reference book before buying more oils. It will repay you by taking away the guesswork you might be doing. It’s also an oils thesaurus of sorts, because you’ll start to get the hang of which oils share high percentages of the same constituents. If you’ve run out of frankincense, for instance, you might consider substituting sandalwood or cedarwood depending on your needs because they are both high in sesquiterpenes, too. Handy to know!
For some historical and technical background on frankincense, you can get up to speed with this post as part of our ‘Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture’ series. And you’ll find our top 9 uses for frankincense here. Then, please come back so we can get all touchy-feely.
Thanks to its energetic oxygenation and influence on chakras, Frankie (as many oilers fondly call it) has a way of dialling down the chaos and smoking a resin-filled peace pipe with you.
Obsessing much? Whatever the focus of your out-of-balance preoccupation, frankincense can help you to see that you’re obsessing and move you towards honest introspection and reconnection to truth. This can shift you towards a space of serenity and get you off the hamster wheel of negative fixations and thoughts.
Feeling impatient at the drop of a hat? Disconnection from our purpose can make us impatient with everything. So many things can feel like a waste of time and it might be a subconscious panic that you’re not making choices that honour your purpose. Anything not aligned with who you are and why you’re on the planet subtracts from the time you could dedicate to embodying your purpose. You might not have put your finger on it but observe next time you’re feeling impatiently irritated or unsettled and see if this possibility fits.
If you’re feeling any kind of underlying agitation, frankincense can wrap its fragrance molecules around you to create a sense of divine protection and knowing of truth. It really is a magnificent oil.
