Some essential oils shine in the arena of skin care, and palmarosa earns its moment in the sun.
This exquisite oil is steam distilled from the leaves of a grassy plant that’s related to lemongrass. Name-wise, palmarosa’s moniker is a nod to its beautiful fragrance that smells so much like rose, it inspires shifty so-and-sos here and there to palm it off as rose essential oil.
This practice is not only frustrating and dodgy, but it does a disservice to palmarosa essential oil which has its own lovely benefits that should be highlighted, not hidden under a faux rose bushel so to speak.
To finish off that cautionary tale before we focus on the attributes of palmarosa: as always, it’s vitally important to source your essential oils from a company you can trust. That’s why we always choose Young Living and their Seed to Seal® process. You can see why they are so special in this short video.
Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini) shares some traits with its scent twins rose and geranium. All three are highly esteemed for skin care in general, along with being uplifting and settling.
Oomph up the potency of your favourite serum and moisturiser by adding several drops of palmarosa essential oil. The quantity will vary depending on the volume you’re adding it to. As a rough guide, I’d try 6 drops in a 30mL bottle and assess and adjust from there to suit my own skin needs. It smells amazing so you’ll also love the scent on your skin.

Another pampering way to enjoy palmarosa essential oil is by adding several drops to a warm footbath, especially if you’ve been wearing uncomfortable shoes that have been chafing you crazy all day and have left you a nagging reminder.
Add 2-3 drops to your favourite carrier oil and slide your delicious DIY bath oil into the tub with you for a relaxing escape for however long you can quietly make the bathroom your oasis. (I highly recommend a Do Not Disturb sign.)
Enjoy this bath time treat just prior to sleep and you’ll find it a wonderful prelude to putting your head on your pillow. Tuck a tissue with a drop of palmarosa into your pillowcase to really seal the sleep deal.
Palmarosa is a key ingredient in a number of Young Living blends, including Awaken™, Clarity™, Forgiveness™ Gentle Baby™, Harmony™and Joy™. It helps to counter feelings of insecurity, uncertainty and general exhaustion. And if your defensive side is often rearing, palmarosa can help to tame that, too. If you’re on the fly, inhale directly from the bottle. When you’re home, pop some in your diffuser along with some Bach on your playlist and in ten minutes, you’ll be feeling much more mellow and people-ready.
If Young Living Animal Scents Ointment is available in your market (when logged you’re your virtual office, check your NFR programme too, just in case), you’ll find it included amongst the many luscious ingredients within. A portion of all proceeds from Animal Scents products goes to support Vital Ground, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the habitat of grizzly bears and other wide-roaming wildlife. Good for your heart as well as your animals.
Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.
