“The reason birds can fly and we can’t is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings.” J M Barrie

(Companion oils: Young Living Valor® / Valor II™)

If you have a date with a plane and a parachute on the weekend and you’re sleepless with excitement, not white-knuckle terror, this post isn’t for you. You can go back to rechecking your pack.

But if you’re grappling with quieter demons that are stopping you from taking a leap of faith towards something your heart is telling you, not death-defying but fearful all the same: hello. We feel your struggle. And it’s real.

Whatever that something is – you know, the thought that simply won’t go away, no matter how many practical reasons you give yourself for not pursuing it – here’s a crucial point to consider: It won’t go away.

So there are two choices if we’re going to be excruciatingly simplistic and annoying (in a well-intentioned way).

Door A: Love those practical reasons and fully and completely accept that you are putting [insert said goal / passion / latent ballet-dancing dreams here] aside either permanently, or for a specific timeframe after which you will revisit them and take stock again.

Door B: Take a leap of faith.

Which is the best choice? The one you make.  Honour that, respect it and don’t look back. Second guessing erodes your self-confidence and soul one crummy fantasy-laden doubt at a time.

Opening Door A doesn’t mean the end of the dream. Honestly, now might not be the best time to take the plunge.

The cost on the other side of the human ledger might not outweigh the temporary euphoria of saying, “Oh, to heck with it all! I’m going to quit my job and get a one way ticket to Hopeville. I hear it’s filled with instant success, unicorns and rainbow fairy floss.”

Choosing Door A is still proactive.  You’re no longer a victim of, “I’d love to do this but I can’t because …”  It’s taking back the reins and saying, “I’d love to do this but I choose right now to honour other things that are more important to me in my life, like promises I’ve made, seeing another dream through because it’s also important, loving reason, logical reason, sensible reason, wise reason, respectful reason …”

Once you consciously choose Door A, look at the possibilities of having a piece of that dream while you’re getting other ducks in a row. Do you really want to run away and join a circus, or would learning to juggle and entertaining friends with after-dinner tricks give you enough of a buzz? Nice, but no? Then what skills do you need that you can start acquiring. Pick one small thing – and only one thing or you’ll get overwhelmed and do nothing at all – and find a way to slot that into your schedule. Agree with yourself to start that one thing and let the rest go from your mind until your scheduled ‘revisit’ time arrives. Put it in your diary. Take that very first baby step you committed to, and observe the constant undercurrent of unrest dissolve. Well done, you good thing – you’re honouring yourself. Meanwhile, your soul thanks you for not making a promise to yourself that you won’t keep. You’ve said you will revisit. Make sure you do.  Door A essential oil companions: Young Living Acceptance™ and Present Time™

As for Door B? What if you know deep down that it’s time to dig deep and take a chance?  Maybe it’s time to back yourself.

You can always find practical reasons to choose to do anything. Just as polls and data can be swayed to get the results desired, we get pretty smart at talking ourselves into and out of things.

Perhaps you want to take a chance but you’re telling yourself for the umpteenth-and-a-half time, “I just don’t know what to do!”, guess what? You’re right.

Any time you say that, you’re tossing another log on the self-doubt fire and the toasted marshmallows taste pretty lousy. How about telling yourself instead, “I’ll figure it out.” (Thank you, Marie Forleo, for that very simply profound gem.  “Everything is figureoutable.”)

I’ve heard it said that truth feels light. I like that. So easy. Flip a coin over two choices and your instincts are telling you what you want as soon as it lands. Yay or Argh? Asked and answered, more often than not. Or you can simply ask yourself, “Does this feel heavy or does this feel light?”

Along with J M Barrie’s birds for inspiration, when it’s time for you to take flight, Young Living Valor™ and Valor II™ are uplifting essential oil companions. Both include:

  • spruce/Northern Lights Black spruce in the case of Valor II (opens and releases energetic blocks, grounding)
  • rosewood (relaxing, empowering, strengthening)
  • frankincense (high in sesquiterpenes for buoying the mind, spirits and determination)

When you’re taking a chance and spreading those wings, remember: you don’t have to fly alone unless you want to.  Lots of people you know right now want you to succeed.  “Faith, hope and love … the greatest of these is love.”
