Do you have a Highly Sensitive Person in your life? Maybe it’s you? In today’s post, we’ll give you a list of essential oils that are highly restorative for the highly sensitive souls of the world.
For those who don’t have this kind of nature, it’s hard to imagine what it’s like to go through life with this heightened sense that tunes into everything including other people’s emotions and amplifies it.
In the fairytale The Princess and the Pea, the princess could feel a single pea under a mound of mattresses. For the highly sensitive person, this is only a few mattresses far from the truth.
Imagine you’re walking around like a giant amplifier: it’s easy to feel overwhelmed! You can keep enduring it for so long but the more you have to do it without being able to retreat and close off the excess stimulus until your system has had enough quiet time, the more the stress and anxiety builds.
Gathering oneself can be done pretty quickly once you become aware that you have this trait, and you learn to manage it by learning how to pace appointments and allow breathers – even if it’s just getting to a park for 10 minutes or escaping to the restroom or any quiet space where you won’t be interrupted.
Headphones and some soothing music for five minutes respite can be a huge help. Baroque music is especially awesome for harmonising and calming ourselves.
Focusing on breathing and if you are able to learn to meditate: these are also very soothing tools.
Keeping to routines, especially for eating and sleeping, and avoiding stimulants are essentials, not optional, as are having peaceful surroundings.
Things like travel and moving home can be living hell for HSPs. Changes of routine, eating and sleeping irregularly or not at all, unattractive or messy environments are debilitating in a way that cannot be conceived by the 80 to 85% of the population who are not this way inclined.
If you’re thinking it must be awful to have this trait, though, think again. Some of the most profound creative thinking and work and contributions to life on the planet have come from people who possess this attribute. While it can feel somewhat of a curse, when you can figure out how to navigate this special sea of sensitivities, it truly is a gift to be treasured and glad of.

Everything from work to play to relationships carries extra challenges for the HSP. If you have an HSP in your life, please take the time to understand them and respect this something to be appreciated rather than an inconvenience or ‘something you have to work with’ as if it’s a chore. When you do so, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most breathtaking insights and love you’ll ever have bestowed on you.
If you’re an HSP and you’re in a relationship with someone highly outgoing who loves constant stimulation, it’s easy to put pressure on yourself to keep up with them so you don’t feel like you’re letting them down or spoiling their fun. It’s at times like that when you can set up a day for yourselves where you start to hit the wall and risk saying things you’ll wish you hadn’t said. So it’s vitally important that you do communicate with your loved one and find ways to manage it so that you’re both able to be happy.
Usually it just takes a small amount of compromise and understanding. If there’s a day-long activity they are hankering to do, is there a way you can sit out some of it and have some quietude? Are they happy to do part of the hike themselves? Or maybe you walk and talk for chunks of it then put on your headphones and agree to have some quiet stretches. Frankly, it probably wouldn’t do them any harm, either.
Whether this kind of situation in a relationship or any kind of stresses from having to endure long stretches where it’s difficult to get some alone time and quiet space, breathing in certain essential oils is a beautiful way to keep yourself hanging in there and even extend the limits of what you can comfortably tolerate.
Here are some favourites for you to try. They are all available from Young Living. Using genuinely pure and authentic essential oils is vital to all of us, and even more so (if that’s possible!) for ultra-sensitive people. I can whole-heartedly recommend Young Living’s for their impeccable purity. You can learn in this short video why we only ever recommend and choose Young Living oils and love them so much!

Young Living Valor™ (includes Northern Lights Black Spruce, blue tansy and frankincense)
Valor™ is one of Young Living’s most popular and treasured oils. If you were to only choose one oil blend to centre yourself, feel well-grounded in your sense of self and love yourself, this one is magnificent. Even when you’re using other blends for special support with particular feelings and needs, using Valor™ on your feet before you do anything else in your day, before you go to sleep and before you apply or inhale other oils will provide you with a beautiful base from which to work.
If Valor is out of stock due to an occasional supply challenge, please substitute it with Valor II.
Young Living White Angelica™ (includes melissa, bergamot, Northern Lights Black Spruce and rose)
This exquisite blend comforts and strengthens, balances and grounds. It can help to protect and support your aura and keep emotional energy in your tank. It’s said to ward off negative energies.
You can diffuse White Angelica or inhale it directly from the bottle. It’s also beautiful to apply it to your shoulders, up the centre of your back, wrists and ears, throat, neck, tummy or feet. Try also smoothing a few drops between your palms, applying to your chakras then move your hands all around your body, a few inches away from it, as if you’re making a divinely-scented force field around yourself
Young Living Gathering™ (includes Northern Lights Black Spruce, Royal Hawaiian sandalwood and vetiver)
Chaotic energies are hard enough for anyone but even more so for HSPs. To help you overcome those kinds of energies, inhale Gathering™ from the bottle or diffuse it. This blend has a woodsy, intriguing fragrance and is a glorious way to bolster your defences and keep you from feeling overwhelmed. Its harmonising effect is also a tremendous support for meditation.
Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.
