“The time at our disposal each day is elastic; the passions we feel dilate it, those that inspire us shrink it, and habit fills it.” Marcel Proust

“I’m not feeling very inspired today.”

This from a young child talking to her mother as I was standing in a queue behind them.

I had a chuckle to myself at the rather adult statement coming out of this little human. She was looking seriously up at her mum and swinging one pink spotted shoe from side to side as if to try and conjure up the inspiration she was seeking.

Perhaps she had an innate sense that movement and action could help stir up a muse. It reminded me of hearing a recent interview with writer, director and teacher Julia Cameron, author of ‘The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity.’  Her work has helped countless of people from many walks of life to “discover and recover their creativity”.

And the principles are very useful for those with entrepreneurial leanings, too. There’s something immensely creative about being an entrepreneur, so it makes perfect sense.

Anyway, back to the podcast I was listening to. In a nutshell, Ms Cameron suggests that coming up with ‘If Only-s’ is a sure fire sign that you’re blocked. That’s a biggie right there.

Three ‘rinse and repeat’ steps form the fundamentals of what she teaches:

Morning pages

Writing several pages by hand and ‘brain dumping’ every morning.

Taking yourself on an Artist Date once a week

Woo yourself, schmooze your muse, do something that appeals to you as a fun and creative activity, whether it be getting lost in the shelves of a children’s bookstore or wandering through flower markets; importantly, this is a solo activity as it is intended to help you make a “radical withdrawal from co-dependency”.  Ouch.

Walking

20 minutes twice a week

Do all three of these and Ms Cameron says they will guide you to the next best step. If it’s a pink polka-dotted one, all the better.

Not surprisingly, these recommendations are all based on taking regular, constructive action. And guess what?

“As you move toward a dream, the dream moves toward you.” Julia Cameron
