“The most effective way to do it, is to do it.” Amelia Earhart
(Companion oil: Young Living Motivation™)
I was walking the other day within earshot of a couple of suited up blokes. They were nursing takeaway double shot tall macchiatos — no sugar — and looked stressed as they headed back to their office feeling unmotivated after having the rug pulled out from under them.
I know this from being an Accidental Eavesdropper, not because I’m psychic. (I’ve been using Young Living Envision™ a lot lately, though, so who knows what might happen.)
It turns out they had been slogging things out and burning the midnight oil for weeks working on a merger — and had just been told that morning that it wasn’t going ahead. And that all the work they had done was for nought. Nada. Zippo.
Motivation is a funny thing. Have you ever told someone you weren’t feeling motivated, only to have them give you The Pep Talk about mind over matter, and how we must simply resolve to do the thing that must be done? Amelia Earheart’s quote says it in a succinct nutshell.
Sometimes that’s all we need. No excuses. Stop telling ourselves stories. You know, the ones that reassure us it’s ok to wait until we’ve done more research, or that family drama has settled into calmer waters, or Fido stops eating your homework.
When I’m in the right mood, I can do this. I can strap on Amelia’s aviator’s cap and take flight head first towards wherever my Action Steps compass is pointing.
When I’m not in the right mood? Forget it. On days like those, I feel like our two Double Shot Tall Macchiatos walking despondently back to a place where their hard work had just been put in the shredder and they were feeling gutted.

Based on research in this TED talk by Dan Ariely on What Makes Us Feel Good About Our Work, it’s easy to understand how unmotivated they felt. When our work is meaningful, we feel good about it. If it is destroyed, we feel dispirited.
Dan has a great reference to demonstrate this when he talks about prison movies.
“Sometimes the way that the guards torture the prisoners is to get them to dig a hole, and when the prisoner is finished, they ask him to fill the hole back up and then dig again. There’s something about this cyclical version of doing something over and over and over that seems to be particularly demotivating.”
When Double Shot Tall Macchiatos dug their hole then realised they’d have to fill it up and dig it again, no wonder they were finding it tough to get their mojo firing.
At times like this, when Amelia’s advice isn’t enough to rally your reserves, Young Living Motivation™ is a great essential oil blend to use as your 100% synthetic-free personal fragrance. And if you’re feeling like you can take on the world, apply some anyway. It won’t hurt and can make things really, really sing.
To order Young Living Motivation™, please contact me and I’ll give you a hand.
Rub a drop behind your ears several times a day and inhale directly from the bottle whenever you want to draw on some positive energy to help you take action and overcome procrastination. That’s what it was formulated for, just as the name says.
Motivation™ includes the single essential oils of:
- roman chamomile (combats restlessness)
- spruce (helps release blocks and feel grounded)
- ylang ylang (restores confidence)
- lavender (tested at Kyushu University in Japan for helping sustain attention during a long-term vigilance task [Shimizu K, et al., 2008])
If you’d like to put off taking action for a bit longer by using the ‘research’ excuse, you’ll find another post on motivation here.
Have a great weekend, and enjoy the good oil daily.
