We’ve talked about ways of looking after your hair from the inside with foods and supplements that can help create a supportive environment for hair health.
But to really have your hair shining and lustrous, it’s also important to look at the products you’re using and fortifying from the outside in.
You might already be aware of the growing concerns about things like sulfates, parabens and synthetic fragrances that go into many commercial hair products. Ironically, companies with such products are now releasing ranges to sell alongside them which they say are free of major nasties. Unfortunately, greenwashing is common marketing practice and people trusting the large print on the front of the bottle can end up putting their faith in something that still has plenty of other undesirables within.
Do your research and become a label reader is my recommendation. (You’ll need to carry trail mix with you when you shop and wear comfortable shoes. On the plus side, if you prefer shopping alone — problem solved.)
Along with choosing genuine natural products — Young Living has a beautiful line of haircare and skincare enhanced with their pure essential oils, by the way — you can whip up some recipes at home.
Essential oils have been traditionally used on the scalp and hair for centuries and are being researched likewise. Head to your favourite essential oil text books and search online for research studies for more information.
If you’re a regular here at The Good Oil Daily, you won’t be surprised when we say true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the best all-rounders for the hair and scalp, whether oily or dry, thanks to its balancing properties. And hooray, it’s in the Young Living Everyday Oils Collection. Almost too easy. (Click here to browse our Lavender Lovefest.)
This will also connect you up with The Good Oil Team for our personal support and coaching. We'd love to help you on your journey to vibrant well-being the natural way!

- Peppermint and lemon (also Everyday Oils) are great for oiliness (both hair and skin) so you can combine either or both with lavender for that
- Dry scalp? Cedarwood complements lavender nicely
- And rosemary is stimulating, yet balancing for the acid mantle of your scalp. So is cedarwood. Again, combine with lavender and get the synergistic benefits of all of them
- Flaking skin? All of the above plus some melaleuca alternifolia which is a great cleansing-yet-skin-soothing all rounder
Daily Regular Fix
Make up a mixture of your chosen essential oils and keep it next to your shampoo. Put a few drops in your hand then add shampoo, smooth between your palms to activate and apply shampoo to your hair as usual. (Keep it out of your eyes.)
Hair and Scalp Oil Treatment
If you aren’t already a fan of coconut oil, it’s great as a carrier oil for your essential oil hair recipes. Olive and sunflower oils also work like a charm. Look for cold pressed organic oils to be sure their vitamins and goodness have been retained. And Young Living V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex is a blend of a bunch of lovely oils (as the name implies) that absorbs beautifully and washes out of fabrics easily.
Dilute your choice of essential oils with carrier oils in a ratio of around 1:4. I find a teaspoon in total is plenty but if you have longer hair, you might need more.
I rub this into my hair and scalp and massage well with my fingertips for 2-3 minutes and leave in for an hour or more. You can put a shower cap over the top and your body heat will help with absorption. (No, I don’t do this. I’m a bloke.) Shampoo and condition as usual. Or you can apply this before you go to bed, leave in overnight then shampoo out in the morning.
