Getting married is such a special time. Just as life is about the journey rather than the destination, so is getting married.
Whether a quiet, simple ceremony or something on a grander scale, each strand you weave into the day becomes part of the tapestry you’ll want to remember with fondness in years to come. Essential oils have an amazing ability to sharpen your clarity, help you navigate potentially challenging situations, have confidence in your decision making and stay present in the now.
Are you up to your ears in wedding magazine clippings, Pinterest boards and cake samples? For practical oil-based help in planning your wedding, please check out last week’s post.
As for when the big day arrives? Here’s your step-by-step guide for using essential oils, from the night before to heading off in your Just Married chariot.
Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils. Our favourites are Young Living oils and those are the ones we’ve chosen here – because we know them, love them and trust them!
The Night Before
Make sure you’ve finished up all your social media updates, emails and anything requiring gadgetry early in the evening. It’s time to unplug and let your brain quieten down, whether you’re on your own or having a relaxing dinner with nearest and dearest.
Allow time for a comforting bath before bed. You’ll find all you need for cocooning yourself in the bathroom in this post. In a nutshell:
- set up your favourite ‘chill’ playlist
- diffuse your relaxing oils of choice (Into the Future™ and Grounding™ would be beautiful choices to set yourself up for a confident night’s sleep)
- light some candles
- add a few drops of the oils you’re diffusing to a generous handful of pure vegetable oil or unscented bath/shower gel base in the warm water filling your tub
Relax and soak for ten minutes or so. No need to overdo it and definitely watch the water temperature: too hot and you can risk damaging delicate blood capillaries and bringing out skin redness. If you don’t have a tub, you can still diffuse while you hum in the shower. Add essential oils to your shower gel base and have a few gentle beeswax or soy candles for illumination. Bliss.
Get plenty of good quality sleep. Sleep truly is fundamental to a healthy life, and we’ve already covered getting a brilliant night’s sleep here.
Along with putting a couple of drops of lavender or Young Living Peace & Calming™ or Stress Away™ on a tissue on your pillow, writing in your Gratitude journal is a peaceful and life-affirming way to preface sleep. You’re embarking on a new chapter, so taking a moment to give thanks for the blessings you have right now is wonderfully empowering.

On the Big Day
After showering, apply several drops of Valor™ on the soles of your feet and over your root chakra for fortifying your self-confidence and sense of overall calm and wellbeing. Re-apply throughout the day as desired.
Have fun and choose oils for each activity on your schedule for the day. For group activities, turn on the diffuser. When on your own, inhale directly from the bottle or put a drop on a tissue and inhale deeply. If you’ve tried the oil on your skin previously and it’s fine for direct application, you might like to use it as your perfume on the day. Exquisite.
Breakfast
Set a bright and upbeat vibe. (Young Living Joy™, Citrus Fresh™)
Hair and makeup
Bring together your bridal party’s personalities and energy levels. (Harmony™, Gathering™)
On the way to the ceremony
Stay in the now. Yes, everything is taken care of. Before leaving, add a drop of Present Time™ to a section of florist wrapping in your bouquet. There’s usually some kind of green wrap or wire to keep flowers in place. You can inhale oil from your bouquet easily during the trip and before you walk down the aisle.
Before photography
Give your photographer a pre-prepared spray bottle of purified water with 15-20 drops of Young Living Harmony™ to keep in their bag of tricks on the day. Ask them to spritz the air before they start setting up their shots to dispel any anxiety and help set a relaxed mood. It’s also a lovely way to stay fresh and revive before heading to the reception.

The speeches
Stay focused and calm for your own speech (Gathering™). If you think anyone on the speech-giving list is a loose cannon, wave your bottle of Common Sense™ or Grounding™ under their nose and insist they take a few deep breaths first to minimise the chances of them straying too far into crazy territory. And if you need to soothe any ruffled feathers afterwards? Forgiveness™ won’t go astray!
Emergency Kit
Include your favourite essential oils in the emergency ‘running repairs’ kit for your bridesmaid/maid of honour to keep on hand. Along with make-up touch-ups, tissues, band-aids, lip balm, eye drops and the like, Young Living roll-ons are super-convenient for staying calm (Stress Away™ or Tranquil™) and revitalising tired feet (Deep Relief™). Peppermint oil is handy, too, for freshening breath, warding off weariness in the unlikely event you’ll notice it, and helping the wedding cake go down if your tummy still has butterflies.
Honeymoon
Sensation™ essential oil blend and ready-mixed massage oil are resplendent with love-kindling blooms of ylang ylang, jasmine and geranium. Pack them and use them liberally to foster a romantic, sensual start to your wedded bliss. And keep them close at hand when back in everyday life. They’ll rekindle lovely scent memories along with setting the mood.
Soak up every moment. It’s your day – make it everything you dream of. Wishing you every happiness.
