Ask an essential oils fan if they love Frankie, and most will know you aren’t talking about Jersey Boys.
They will nod wisely and give you their personal favourite use for frankincense. It’s said this ‘holy anointing oil’ was thought to cure everything from gout to a broken head in ancient times. (Two bonus tips for today’s post, perhaps!)
Given its pedigree, frankincense is an automatic inclusion in the Young Living Everyday Oils Collection. No matter what your level of experience, this collection is a super handy way to get started or make sure you have a great cross-section on hand to take care of everyday needs — and then some. (You’ll find plenty more tips for these oils here.)
Derived from the Medieval French word for ‘real incense’, frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times.
According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference (Life Science Publishing),
“Herodotus, the Greek historian who lived from 484 BC to 425 BC, recorded that during the yearly feasts of Bel, 1000 talents’ weight of frankincense was offered on the great altar of Bel in Babylon.”
If you’re like me and somewhat rusty on ancient weights and measures, Homer described Achilles bestowing a half-talent of gold to Antilochus as a prize. It was approximately the mass of water required to fill an amphora. If you can dig up an amphora from your back yard, you can start a talent revival. If I can dig up a spade, I’ll join you!

* IMPORTANT CAUTION: Young Living essential oils are the only ones we would ever recommend for use internally. And only those which state on the bottle they can be used that way. Why? Because Young Living sets the standard for purity and authenticity – essential to the safe ingestion of essential oils appropriate for such use. Young Living carefully monitors the production of its oils from beginning to end through its unique Seed to Seal® process, ensuring the purity of each essential oil and protecting nature’s living energy in every bottle.
