Have you hit the Winter Wall yet?

Sure, it’s lovely to have a bit of a cold change. Long comfort food lunches. Log fires. The chance to wear spectacular coats and boots. (Or so I hear from the women I know.) Drives in the country. And here in Australia, four codes of football to choose from.

All well and good, but if the novelty is starting to wear off and spring is still weeks away, what can you do to help you through?

Fill the air with flowers

Flowers and spring go hand in hand. By diffusing essential oils distilled from flowers into the air in your home, you can close your eyes and presto: Spring! (If you’re wondering what diffusion is and why it’s vital to diffuse instead of burning oils, you can read about it here.)

Here are some of our favourites:

Jasmine (Jasminum officinale)

If you have jasmine in your garden, you know what it’s like — that first catch of jasmine on the breeze towards the end of winter, saying, “Not long now before spring has sprung!”

Technically jasmine is an absolute, which means it’s an essence rather than an essential oil. For some botanicals, the fragrance and therapeutic parts of the plant can only be unlocked using solvents. The oils extracted this way are called ‘absolutes’. Absolutes are obtained from the grain alcohol extraction of a concrete, which is the solid waxy residue derived from the extraction of plant materials — usually flower petals.

Jasmine absolute has a warm, exotic, floral fragrance that relaxes, soothes, uplifts, and enhances self-confidence. It has also been used traditionally for romance, attraction and bringing feminine energy into balance. (If you’re curled up on the sofa watching ‘Love Actually’ on a cold, drizzly afternoon, this one makes a nice accompaniment.)

Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)

Steam distilled from leaves and stems, geranium essential oil has an uplifting and calming lightly herbaceous and flowery scent. Diffusing geranium helps release negative memories. (If you’ve been forced into watching ‘Love Actually’ against your will, this one makes a very nice accompaniment.)

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Steam distilled from the flowering tops, lavender essential oil is reminiscent of summer, which also happens to be its harvest time. With a smell that’s sweet, floral and herbaceous, lavender is known as the universal oil due to its all-rounder properties. If in doubt, reach for lavender. And if you’d like to add some fizzy fun to your bath time (depending on the outcome of the ‘Love Actually’ viewing), here’s a super-easy recipe for Lavender Bliss Bath Bombs. (You’ll find lavender in the Young Living Everyday Oils Collection — a great starting point if you’re new to essential oils.)
