Parts 1 and 2 in our series on fast-tracking spring will have you diffusing floral essential oils and tackling mould from the inside out by making sure you’re including some valuable foods and supplements in your diet — simple things like garlic and ginger — and topping up your Vitamin D the free way (hello, sunshine! More on that particular subject here.)
With mould in the your environment causing such problems as muscle and joint pain, headaches, depression, forgetfulness, breathing difficulties and digestive issues (that’s just for starters), it’s absolutely vital to protect your home against mould so it can’t take up residence. Once it has, the battle is a lot harder.
The great news? There are some incredibly potent essential oils that have been proven effective in making it harder for mould to thrive.
According to Dr Edward Close PhD, author of Nature’s Mold Rx, Young Living Thieves® essential oil blend has been shown to be a great adversary for black toxic mold (Stachybotris). And he has also found that bleach is actually ineffective. (If you’re reading this post, there’s a good chance you’re health conscious and environmentally aware and you’ve already banished bleach from the home. If you haven’t, please do a little poking around so you understand the hazards.)
Thieves® blend was created based on research about four thieves in France in the 1400s who rubbed themselves with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing the dead and dying. It includes clove (Syzygium aromaticum), lemon (Citrus limon), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), eucalyptus radiata and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis CT 1,8 cineol).
Air-borne prevention
Diffusing a small amount of Thieves® essential oil blend for short periods (1/2 hour or less) regularly is an easy way to cleanse the air and help make it more difficult for mould spores to take hold. As mould loves damp environments, a non-water style diffuser is the best choice. Young Living has a great range of diffusers, including ones that work by pumping air through the oil to create a microfine mist which hangs in the air. Those units don’t use water so they are ideal for this purpose, and for humid climates where you don’t want to add more moisture to your air. (Thieves® is available separately and also in a smaller size in the Everyday Oils Collection, which is an ideal way to get started if you’re new to essential oils.)

Switch cleaners
The essential oils in Thieves® aren’t just known for tackling mould head on. They have quite amazing cleaning power, so Young Living created Thieves® Household Cleaner to harness them. It’s all-purpose, safe and natural. (If you’d like instant proof, take a look at my oven cleaning demo video.) It’s hard to believe something so potent can be used neat with bare hands and no masks.
There’s a dilution guide on the bottle, but for deterring mould, wipe or spray on undiluted as maximum strength is best for this particular issue. I use it everywhere throughout my bathrooms and sinks. It’s very concentrated so a little goes a long way. When you rinse it off, it flows through the pipes and drains, also helping the cause.
If you do have black toxic mould in your home, you’ll need to take some intensive measures to combat it, including diffusing Thieves® for longer durations and this is a set protocol that requires guidance. You’ll find the specifics in Dr Close’s Nature’s Mold Rx book which you can search for online.
We’ll wrap our fast-track to spring series with a final tip, not about mould prevention but as a general mid-winter boost: sparkle up those windows. Light has a very uplifting effect — the more you can encourage inside, the brighter you’ll feel.
Dilute your Thieves® Household Cleaner by 50-100:1 in a spray bottle: spray on, wipe off. Works a treat, simple as that. And let the sun shine in!
