Old habits die hard!
That’s why it’s easier to replace them with new ones.
I’m reading a fabulous book by Charles Duhigg on ‘The Power of Habit’ (published by Random House). Though I’m only partway through it, I’ve reached a crucial part in the process of habit forming and habit changing that made an essential oil-powered A-HA! lightbulb go off over my head and I wanted to share it with you straight away!
Unless you’re one of the rare humans on the entire planet with 100% positive and constructive habits and 0% undermining and detrimental ones, I highly recommend you read this book as soon as you can. I’m not even a third of the way through it but already, I’ve gained tremendous insights into how habits are formed – both good and bad ones – and how we can shape and change them.
Habits are triggered by cues. A certain cue will send us into a routine that leads to getting some kind of reward. And it’s not enough to get a reward: we need to actually crave that reward, whether it be the feeling of comfort, the relief of drowning out anxiety, or simply enjoying finishing off our cleaning by spraying around a nice smell (in which case, please use essential oils, not a synthetic one!)
This cycle is what makes a habit. Now, if the routine is detrimental to our health or not constructive in getting us what we want in our lives, then we need to change the routine we engage in when the cue or trigger appears. Substituting something positive for that old self-defeating routine is how we can change the habit from a poor or downright dangerous one to a helpful one.
A big key to having this all stick, however, is to believe. You need to build up an unshakeable, rock star level of belief in yourself and also believe in your new routine – no second guessing, no ‘what if’, ‘just this once’ or ‘maybe’.
Failure to believe deep down into your core can result in your having enough in the tank for your new/replacement habit to hold up in routine, everyday circumstances, but when you’re suddenly in a stressful situation instead: Bye Bye new habit. Before you can say, “Uh-oh!”, your self-defeating old habit has you down for the count all over again.
So when I reached this part in the book where the power of belief in changing and upholding new habits is revealed, I thought, “I know the perfect thing!” and located my bottle of Young Living Believe™.
How amazing to be able to use the positive influence of a beautiful essential oil in such a profound way as to help you take charge of bad habits and replace them with gloriously wondrous new ones?!

If you’ve tried and tried and tried again to kick old habits only to have the ones you’ve replaced them with fail or go AWOL, then why not incorporate Young Living Believe™ essential oil blend into your day, especially while you’re engaged in whatever activity it is that you’re wanting to become your new habitual response. You’ve absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. It smells divine, it’s resplendent with oils to relax and ground you and elevate your mind above those downer doubts that quickly creep in to undermine you.
Now, as I said, I’m only partway through the book so there will be other things to do to support yourself in forming new habits and changing old ones, no doubt. So stay mindful of the other Young Living oils at your disposal and you might find more ones to help you.
My favourite way to use Young Living Believe™ and other ‘feelings’ essential oils is to diffuse them several times a day for up to half an hour at a time. The delicate constituent-laden oil molecules will hang in the air for some time, delivering their benefits to everyone who inhales them.
- Another highly helpful way to use them is to go within and focus quietly for a few moments while applying a drop to your wrists, touching them also to your forehead and pressing behind your ears and at the base of the head
- You can also add them to your favourite natural shower gel or Young Living Bath Gel Base and massage oil (hello, Young Living V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Complex) as other easy and enjoyable ways to add more Believe™ to your day
Young Living Believe™ helps to release our potential and restore feelings of hope.
It includes frankincense (Boswellia carterii), Idaho Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) and geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) along with a bunch of others beauties, and it really does smell amazing. Try using it behind your ears and on your pulse points as a 100% natural perfume or cologne, too. It rarely needs dilution but test first for your own skin’s sensitivity.
Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.
Please ensure you are choosing a brand with complete transparency from seed to seal, such as Young Living. You can learn in this short video why we only ever recommend and choose Young Living oils and love them so much!
