When I first started using Young Living essential oils, I was like a kid in a lolly shop when it came to ordering.
Being someone who throws himself into things with gusto, I joined the Essential Rewards system straight away. It made too much sense not to. Having my order automatically process each month was nice and easy. And while some people love changing theirs every month, I tend to keep the same things in place as a base, those being my Big Three for energising and nutrition: NingXia Red®, Mineral Essence™ and OmegaGize³™. I know if I forget, I’ll always use them.
But I’ll usually add other items on top of those. Why buy cleaning products and personal care items from the local health shop when I can buy them from my own business?! Buying elsewhere won’t give me all the generous reward points that Young Living does to redeem for free products! And I love that all the YL products are infused with their exquisite guaranteed-pure essential oils, even the food items. Where else can I get that?! (Nowhere, in case you were wondering.)
In the early days, I accrued a lot of single oils. It felt like fun to make up blends using my trusty essential oils reference book. And sometimes, applying a single oil is all that’s needed to do the trick. Peppermint for freshening breath or melaleuca alternifolia to help cleanse a cut, for instance. And lavender’s called the Swiss Army Knife of essential oils with good reason. There are often other oils that will be more effective for the task at hand but in their absence, it’s a great all-rounder.
That said, once you have a few core staple single oils in your collection, here are some great reasons to focus on adding a number of ready-made essential oil blends to the mix.

Essential oil blends are formulated specifically by experts to tap into the synergy that happens when essential oils are combined together.
The definition of synergy is when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Essential oils can be explained in chemistry and science terms. They are comprised of a complex array of constituents – upwards of 300 for most oils – and each constituent has certain influences and characteristics over our mood or at a physical level. But they are also felt to have electrical frequencies and work on an energetic level. Either way, a highly skilled essential oil expert will analytically determine or intuitively divine, depending on their method of creation, a particular combination of oils in specific quantities to create a targeted solution for just about anything you can imagine nowadays.
And Gary Young (founder of Young Living) with his lifetime of immersion in essential oils will be infinitely more deft at putting a highly effective and beautiful blend together than I am. And I love to save time, so I’m very happy simply opening a ready-made bottle of blend and letting it work its charm.
You can tap into the power of a large number of different oils including rare ones and those you’re less likely to use often – some complex blends have a dozen single oils – without acquiring a dozen single oils, for example.
Young Living White Angelica™ essential oil blend is delicate and when you inhale it, you really know you’re holding one of life’s special gifts in your hands. It helps bring a sense of security and strengthen the aura around your body. If you’re feeling like you’re being barraged from all sides (or better yet, before you start feeling like that), a few drops of White Angelica™ gently smoothed between your palms, inhaled and ruffled through your hair and across your shoulders will feel very centering.
White Angelica™ includes 12 single oils with a little virgin coconut oil (fractionated for longer shelf life) and amongst those oils are myrrh, sandalwood, melissa, rose and angelica: treasured oils that are an investment you might not be ready to make as individual single oils all at once. But ordering White Angelica as 5mL or 15mL size is more ‘do-able’ than buying every oil and I would only be guessing at how much of each to include. It makes sense in all ways to add this blend to my collection.
Look for Blends When You Need Several Single Oils for One Purpose
Let’s say you’ve read up in your trusty reference book for help and find that essential oils of melissa, sandalwood and helichrysum are all awesome for whatever said mystery ailment might be.
A couple of blends spring to mind that include all of these amongst their ingredients: Forgiveness™ and Brain Power™.
Let’s say you don’t have melissa, sandalwood and helichrysum on hand but Eureka: you have one of these blends. Problem solved. Just check for any particular usage cautions in case the blend you’re considering suits the method of application you want to use, then you’re good to go.
Essential Oil Blends Take Out the Guesswork
Young Living names its blends in very practical ways. As much as possible, the blend name is a clear neon sign flashing its intention. Scanning the order form, you can generally get the gist and have the peace of mind of knowing a gifted industry expert has created something wonderful with the aim of making your life easier and helping you care for yourself and your family. No skills or talents in essential oil crafting are needed on your part: easy!
