Clean and invigorating, lemongrass will uplift and refresh your home’s spirits and yours, and today we’ll show your our top 7 ways to use this delightful essential oil !
Lemongrass is steam distilled from the grasses of the Cymbopogon flexuosus plant. This rugged and very useful bush is tough in droughts, loves heat and humidity, full sun and part shade and thrives in warm temperate and tropical conditions.
If you hanker to plant some, you’ll find it’s awesome for preventing soil erosion and protecting other plants from bugs and what not.
It’s logical, then, that this also makes a wonderful essential oil for your DIY bug repellent spray! A quick and easy recipe is to add several drops to a bottle of hydrating mist like Young Living Lavaderm™, shake it well before spritzing and be careful to always avoid the eyes. You can also transfer your favourite natural facial toner – we love the Young Living ART® Toner – into a spray bottle, add lemongrass plus patchouli and lavender if you have them, and away you go! Ditch the nasty fumes and questionable ingredients in most commercial repellents and give your skin and mood a beautiful treat at the same time. Win, win!
Lemongrass is legendary in many cultures and Ayurvedic medicine as a light nourishing tea or soup when you’re feeling under the weather. It’s also a favourite ingredient in lots of varieties of Asian cooking including curries, soups and stir fries.
One of the many appeals of Young Living’s essential oils is that many can be added to food and drink, and lemongrass is one of them! So keep a bottle in the pantry and enjoy the vibrant flavour it imparts to your cooking. You can also add a drop or two to plain water for a subtle citrus drink that’s beautifully refreshing in summer, or add it to very warm water in winter to turn it into a comfort drink.
How do you know if it’s safe to add essential oil to food and drink? When the label clearly states you can do so. Quality is absolutely imperative, and in addition to that, nature did not intend for all essential oils to go down the hatch!
Lemongrass essential oil can be diffused, inhaled directly from the bottle, used topically (dilute as needed with top quality carrier oil like Young Living V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Complex) and Young Living Lemongrass can be added to food and drink. Please always follow the label.
You’ll also find lemongrass enhancing a bunch of Young Living products, including Morning Start Bath & Shower Gel, Ortho Ease® Massage Oil, Purification™, DiGize, En-R-Gee and Inner Child™ essential oil blends. It’s also a beautiful companion oil to apply topically or add to food and drink when you’re using Young Living’s supplements BLM™ and Sulfurzyme™ which are supportive of joints and cartilage.

And now, on to our top 7 ways to use lemongrass essential oil. There’s one for every day of the week!
- Massage: Massage your legs, feet and shoulders at the end of a long day with lemongrass added to carrier oil to relax and unwind
- Freshen stale smells: Diffuse lemongrass in your kitchen and bathroom to freshen them up and chase away stale and musty smells while uplifting and refreshing you, too!
- DIY non-toxic insect repellent: Add 10-15 drops to toner or hydrating mist in a 100mL spray bottle or moisturiser to create a non-toxic and deliciously perfumed insect repellent and soothe your skin if anything slips through the lemongrass-infused force field (include patchouli, tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia) and lavender to further fortify and add other scents into the mix)
- Cleaning boost: Add lemongrass to your dishwashing liquid, laundry liquid and natural cleaner for an extra burst of freshness
- Non-toxic fabric freshener: Add 8-10 drops of lemongrass to a spray bottle of filtered water with a fine misting nozzle, shake well before spritzing curtains, carpets, beds and linens (test first in an inconspicuous place: use on fabrics that are water-safe)
- Lemongrass tea and iced tea: add 1-2 drops to a glass of cool or warm water as desired, or mix up a pitcher in summer (adjust oil quantity to suit amount of water) together with a few lemon slices and handful of crushed mint leaves
- Kids craft project to freshen your car interior and uplift your mood while you’re driving: make colourful pompoms from old t-shirts or absorbent fabrics that are too tired to donate, add 3-6 drops lemongrass to the pompom and tie with a ribbon to hang off your rear view mirror. The lemongrass will evaporate and its scent will fade, so refresh and revive them as needed
