Back in the 70s, no dinner party was complete without big hair, groovy wallpaper and after dinner mints — you remember, those wafer-thin ones in the individual black envelopes that looked ever so discreet but vanished from the tray in a very indiscreet fashion.
Today’s healthful choc-mint truffle balls might not fit into tiny waxed paper envelopes but they’ll help you satisfy an after dinner sweet craving in a nutrient-packed way. And if you wrapped each one in a small cellophane bag with a gold ribbon and served them up to guests, I’m guessing they would vanish just as quickly as the others used to!
By including authentic peppermint essential oil, you’re not just adding a fresh minty flavour, you’re also turbo-charging your antioxidants. (You can read more about that here).
And these truffle balls are like a little black dress: you can dress them up with different essential oils to suit your cravings. We’ve included a few of our favourites below to get you started.

Choc-Mint Truffle Balls
- 10 fresh dates
- ½ cup raw organic cashews
- 1 tblsp raw cacao (available at health food stores)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tblsp dried Young Living NingXia Wolfberries (we trust these as being the best ones available. If temporarily out of stock, look for authentic organic Lycium barbarum at your health food store)
- 1 tblsp raw coconut oil with 1-2 drops of Young Living peppermint essential oil gently stirred in*
- ½ cup dessicated coconut (for rolling)
Put everything except the dessicated coconut into your food processor.
As Jamie Oliver might say, “Give it a wazz,” until everything is combined and starts to ball together. Turn off the processor.
Scoop out a spoonful and form into a ball with damp hands (the mixture sticks less to your fingers), roll the truffle ball around in the dessicated coconut and repeat until done.
Refrigerate for 20 minutes or so until firm and keep in an airtight jar in the fridge for storage — not that you will have to keep them for long!
* Adjust to taste. Some oils are stronger in flavour than others so you’ll need to experiment. And substitute any of these Young Living oils depending on your mood: spearmint, tangerine, orange or ginger.
IMPORTANT CAUTION: Young Living essential oils are the only ones we would ever consider for ingestion. And only those which state on the bottle they can be used that way. Why? Because Young Living sets the standard for purity and authenticity – essential to the safe ingestion of essential oils appropriate for such use. Young Living carefully monitors the production of its oils from beginning to end through its unique Seed to Seal® process, ensuring the purity of each essential oil and protecting nature’s living energy in every bottle.
