A game I like to play with other Young Living members is the, “What’s your ‘desert island’ oil?”
Answers range from “Lime oil so I can add it to coconut water and pretend I’m sipping pina coladas!” to “Young Living Hope™ so I can keep the faith in continuing to write HELP ME in five metre high letters on the beach every day.”
So what’s your desert island oil?
Honestly, I’d find it pretty hard to narrow it down to one and my choice could well be different to yours.
Case in point: relaxing prior to bed time. Having used essential oils for decades now, I’ve chatted with countless people about what they find works well for them. I’m always curious to hear people’s stories.
Some swear by valerian or one of Young Living’s beautiful relaxing blends like Peace & Calming™, RutaVaLa™ Roll-on or Valor™. Others love lavender all on its own.
We’re talking true lavender here, of course – lavandula angustifolia – not lavandin which is sometimes passed off as lavender oil by unscrupulous vendors or included along with true lavender or synthetic lavender oil because it’s a less costly oil to produce. (Check out our video on synthetics here. You’ll be aghast at what goes on.)
Did you know that more lavender essential oil is sold than produced in the world?
Basic maths tells us that the only way that can happen is if some of the oil being sold as pure lavender essential oil is impure or a synthetic substitute. The demand for essential oils has surged dramatically over the past 15 to 20 years and unfortunately, this has made it highly appealing as a business enterprise for people whose interests solely lie in making profits from a booming industry rather than producing essential oils that are of the exceptional quality and purity needed to actually provide benefits to the user.
If you think I’m being melodramatic, I get it. Once you’ve researched it some more, I think you’ll share my concerns. I’m super passionate about oil quality and it’s too easily overlooked when people are deciding which brand of oils to choose.
Just a few of the reasons I choose Young Living essential oils are*:
- 23 years of industry leadership
- 16 corporate and partner farms (and growing)
- 50 highly trained scientists
- 12 independent partner labs
- 2 corporate quality labs
- 600+ life enhancing products
- 70 charities and causes supported by the D.Gary Young Young Living Foundation (100% of all administrative costs are covered by Young Living, allowing 100% of donations to support projects)
* Figures as at October 2017
You’ll find more reasons to love Young Living and their Seed to Seal® process in this short video. I urge you to thoroughly look into whichever brand you’re considering. It’s easy to create a glossy story and great marketing. Please check into what lies beneath.
If this blog post was a desert island, you could be feeling like we’ve been wandering around for a while in the jungle, albeit part of my crusade to help you spend your essential oil money on ones that won’t let you down! So on to my top three desert island candidates if you’re ever stranded. (Let’s hope not!)

All of these are included amongst Young Living’s culinary oils that can safely be added to food and drink, as mentioned on TV’s Sunrise by Chef Kate (chef to the stars, including Miranda Kerr. View it here.) So you can add a drop to your water for energy and vitality.
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
In ancient times, frankincense was said to cure anything from gout to a broken head. Mythical times wording, not mine. I’m just quoting legend, but I figure anything with that ‘rock star oil status’ from times long ago when oils were first known is worth having with me. Gout and broken noggins aside, frankincense is a very elevating oil for the mind and spirits and wonderful for skin care. I reckon I could find a way of extracting coconut oil given enough time – so blend the two together and it might stop me looking like an old gnarly coconut when I’m rescued. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender is commonly called the Swiss Army Knife of essential oils, being an all-rounder that offers benefits ranging across pretty much anything that comes to mind. A stalwart of natural skin care ranges for its general nurturing and balancing properties, an evergreen favourite for putting a drop on your pillow before slumber, loved by bears with sore heads, a vital ingredient in Young Living Lavaderm™ for post-sun care so a clear winner when sunblock is in short supply, as tends to happen when stranded in the elements. Lavender is also generally great as a feel-good oil as it’s both uplifting for the spirits and relaxing at the same time. If the bugs are out in force, lavender can help cleanse irritating bites. And check out our top 9 uses here.
Young Living Thieves®
The key ingredient in Young Living’s cleaning range, toothpastes, mouthwash, personal cleansing products like wipes, spray and the awesome Young Living Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier. If Tom Hanks’s character in Cast Away had this with him, that entire scene with the tooth might have been unnecessary! It’s also the blend used in Young Living Inner Defense capsules, designed to support well-being by strengthening the immune system. So when it comes to keeping yourself feeling fresh and protected all over, this blend is a winner hands-down. You’ll find more reasons to love Young Living Thieves® blend here.
Lemon and peppermint would also be fantastic choices, with their cleansing and refreshing properties. Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.
