You can warm up with food in winter, but can you warm up with essential oils?
Absolutely!
Here are our favourite tricks and application methods for using essential oils as comfort food for the soul when baby, it’s cold outside.
Please remember: Not all oils are created equal. Quality varies immensely, so please ensure you are choosing a brand with complete transparency from seed to seal, such as Young Living. Discover why we love them so much in this short video then please click here to order.
DIFFUSE SPICY AND WARMING OILS
Bring to mind the usual tips you read for teas and food to help you warm up, like baked apples, ginger tea and fragrant curries.
Look for essential oils evocative of the same and you’ll find yourself adding spicy oils to your diffuser.
For instance, think ginger, clove and Young Living Christmas Spirit™. Cinnamon bark is also fabulous, just be respectful of its hot nature. This oil can be irritating to nasal membranes so don’t inhale it close up, be sure to diffuse for shorter periods with the diffuser elevated well above nose levels, and stick with larger rooms.
APPLY A WARM COMPRESS TO TIRED MUSCLES
When the mercury is dropping, those little niggles and aches that normally don’t overly bother you can become nagging attention seekers. A warming massage oil like Young Living OrthoEase™ or OrthoSport™ hits the spot on its own. But to take it up a notch in warming intensity, you can apply a warm compress over the top.
Sound good? It sure is!
Apply one of the aforementioned ready-mixed massage oils or make your own blend of ‘sporty’ single essential oils like wintergreen, marjoram and juniper. Essential oils are potent, so as always, please follow directions on the bottle and the usual guidelines for safe use of authentic essential oils.
- You’ll need a towel that will cover the area plus a second larger towel or a blanket
- Immerse the smaller towel in a bowl of comfortably hot water to completely soak it. Remove the cloth, wring it out and shake it. By the time you’ve done that, it will be a pleasant warm temperature rather than “ouch, ouch, hot, hot!” Please resist the temptation to apply a towel that’s too hot. The oils have their own warming effect that will be amplified by placing the warm towel over the top. Trust me or you’ll discover the hard way like I did. (Have I told you I’m stubborn?)
- Place this over the area where you’ve applied the essential oils
- Loosely cover the damp, wet towel with the larger dry one or blanket to seal in the heat
- Leave covered for 15 to 30 minutes while you relax and feel your muscles and cares unwinding
Be sure to remove the coverings immediately if you’re feeling any discomfort. It should feel warming but not irritating or uncomfortable. If for some reason this happens, apply pure vegetable carrier oil like Young Living V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Complex to help take away any discomfort. We all have different skin sensitivities so there’s always that slight chance something that’s fine for others might not agree with you.
TENT INHALATION TO COMFORT SNIFFLES OR TICKLES
Add a few drops of your favourite fresh essential oil like eucalyptus radiata or Young Living Purification or R.C. blend in a bowl of hot water (not boiling). Drape a towel over your head and the bowl and inhale the relaxing vapours. You can skip the towel and still enjoy this technique, but creating an aromatic inhalation tent will intensify the effect.
Please Note: Do not use boiling water. It’s harmful to the delicate essential oil molecules and renders them less effective. And it’s difficult to handle safely. You don’t want to have to take care of a burn courtesy of trying to make something else feel better!
WARM FEET, WARM HEART WITH A FOOT BATH
I don’t know that I’ve ever read that the way to a warm heart is through your feet, but if your feet are warm, it’s a lot easier for the rest of you to feel snug.
Grab a bucket or foot bath, add a few drops of your favourite essential oil or a generous glug of Young Living OrthoEase™ and soak those tootsies for a while. Be ready with your fluffiest socks or slippers after you’ve patted your feet nicely dry.
Winter is made for moments like these.
