Today’s essential oil spotlight shines on one of the ‘blue oils’, yarrow. And like its similarly-hued cousins German chamomile and blue tansy, it aligns with the colour psychology of indigo – intuition and perception – and it’s helpful for promoting focus during introspection. This makes it a great companion oil for meditation and tuning into our intuition.
The botanical name for yarrow is Achillea millefolium which is a nod to the Greek hero and great warrior of the Trojan war, Achilles or Achilleus. As you know if you’re a regular here at The Good Oil Daily, we believe essential oils are legendary – and legend has it that Achilles used the herb yarrow to tend his tendon.
Legend also has it that yarrow contains the harmony of yin and yang within it, which is why it’s considered sacred in ancient Chinese culture.
Along with inspiring us, yarrow is grounding at the same time. Again, one sees the balancing aspect of this essential oil: inspiring (action) and grounding (stability). This balancing ability holds the key to its benefits.
Steam-distilled from the tiny pale flowers and green leaves and stems of this fast-growing herb, yarrow or blue yarrow is one of the plants grown on Young Living’s very own Mona farm in Utah, where it was first harvested in 2015 amid a sweet, intoxicating scent and steam-distilled on-site.
Yarrow contains the constituent called chamazulene (5-18%) and it’s this heady sesquiterpene that’s responsible for the beautiful rich blue colour of the resulting essential oil. It’s amazing to see mounds of the cut herb awaiting harvesting – not a sign of blue in sight, just herbaceously flowery soft-green bundles – and then watch the oil from the steam distillation come through in its regal-looking divine hue.
The other key constituents of yarrow are trans-beta-caryophyllene (similar levels to its chamazulene), germacrene, sabinene, beta-pinene and 1,8-Cineole (Eucalyptol).
